Bible Reading Plan January 2008
January is a month of new beginnings. There are 31 days so let us read a chapter of the Book of Proverbs each day. It will be instructive and stimulating. Tuesday 1st Proverbs 1. We are living in an age characterised by information. Information is knowledge. Where do you start? Is knowledge the same as “wisdom”? Wednesday 2nd Proverbs 2. Information is money, big money, and lots of it. But what is the value of wisdom? Thursday 3rd Proverbs 3. What will this New Year bring you? If only you could make the absolute correct decision in every one of the thousands of decisions that you will be making this year! Friday 4th Proverbs 4. We tend to worry about security, like our finances, interest rates and so on. Wisdom provides us with security. What areas of security are given us here? Saturday 5th Proverbs 5. There is a lot of suffering, misery and pain that God does not want for his people. Yet this has been a stumbling block for many. Job’s covenant may be instructive here, (Job 31:1). Sunday 6th Proverbs 6. Once more there are specific warnings. There are five sections here. Are any of these a problem area for you? Monday 7th Proverbs 7. There seems to be a lot of emphasis on relationship purity. Do we really need this? Does God perhaps know how frail we really are? Tuesday 8th Proverbs 8. Phhhew, managed to get through the first week? Let’s move along. Wisdom brings some excellent rewards. List them off. Wednesday 9th Proverbs 9. Here is the contrast between the marvel of Wisdom and the utter stupidity of Folly. How come we don’t always practise wisdom? Thursday 10th Proverbs 10. In this chapter Solomon begins a whole series of instructions and continues them for several chapters. The benchmark again is “the fear of the Lord”. Friday 11th Proverbs 11. Honesty and uprightness are the themes of this section. And let’s face it, is this not what it means by “love your neighbour”? Saturday 12th Proverbs 12. “Choose your friends carefully” (v 26). How many have not gone astray through the foolish choice of friends? Sunday 13th Proverbs 13. Ouch! What was that “guarding of the lips”? Compare here 1 Pet 3:8-9; 4:8. Monday 14th Proverbs 14. Once more we are reminded of the need to know “the fear of the Lord”, (v 27). Note also verse 34. How we need to pray for those in government. Tuesday 15th Proverbs 15. Ever thought much about “the eyes of the Lord”? (v3) How encouraging this is! He sees and knows our every need! Wednesday 16 Proverbs 16. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do…” Wow, it is the middle of the week and we are halfway January. How is your committing to the Lord going? Thursday 17th Proverbs 17. “He who covers over an offense promotes love”. Is this not what Christ came to do? Are we promoting love?, true love? Friday 18th Proverbs 18. Don’t you love that verse 10? There is a Scripture song of it. Maybe you know it. Ofcourse the idea is also in Ps 46. Perhaps you want to sing it. Saturday 19th Proverbs 19. Have you thought about „lending to God“? Like God wants to borrow from you? What an incredible thought! (v 17) Sunday 20th Proverbs 20. Verse 9 is a real challenge! But it drives us back to the cross and humbly state our need again for God’s forgiving grace. Monday 21st Proverbs 21. A very powerful statement about God‘s sovereingty is found in verse 30. This should give the believer grear comfort in all areas of life. Tuesday 22nd Proverbs 22. This chapter moves us along to “the Sayings of the Wise”. Here we find general admonitions. Wednesday 23rd Proverbs 23. “My son give me your heart”75, v 26. John Calvin‘s motto was: My heart I offer to You. Perhaps you have seen the symbol of the heart on an outstretched giving hand. Thursday 24th Proverbs 24. Verses 11-12 are a real challenge to look out for the plight of others. We have a responsibility for our neighbour. Friday 25th Proverbs 25. Quoted by the Lord Jesus in the sermon on the mount are verses 21-22. Love to the neighbour is such an important theme. Saturday 26th Proverbs 26. Honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of a wise person. And these qualities are ours for the asking! But they cannot come from anything other than the “Fear of the Lord”. Sunday 27th Proverbs 27. How easily we “boast about tomorrow...”. We should take note of what James writes about this, James 3:5 Monday 28th Proverbs 28. Do we hide our sins? (v 13) Or do we confess them as in 1John 1:9? Tuesday 29th Proverbs 29. Verse 18 is an indication of our society. Once the Scriptures are put aside then anything goes. But that can also happen to us! Wednesday 30th Proverbs 30. What things will we ask of the Lord? Verses 7-9 are good advice. Thursday 31st Proverbs 31. A wonderful passage about a godly wife.
